Our last stop of the trip!
Venice is a beautiful place... although I would also liken it to a confusing maze at times. The canals are gorgeous, and there's something about seeing a gondola ride by that captures the romance of the city. Although we have enjoyed every minute of finding our way around, the crazy layout and canals everywhere make it tricky getting from point A to point B.
After leaving Rome early in the morning, we had the whole afternoon to wander around Venice and check out some of the sites. Standing in the middle of the magnificent piazza San Marco is an
experience in itself: Napoleon referred to it as the ‘drawing room of
Europe’, apt today as, at times, it appears that much of Europe’s
population is crammed into this great square. In the square, we were able to see the Basilica di San Marco, Doge's Place (once Venice's political and judicial hub) and Torre dell'Orologio, a clock tower built between 1496 and 1506.
We were also able to check out (and walk over) the Rialto Bridge, a large bridge that contains shops and is packed with people.
My favorite part of Venice was taking a ride in a gondola through the canals. (Another check on the bucket list!)
